The wall is an invisible line from the center of the rim to each basket. It helps establish ball side from help side on defense.
Pressure the ball with one pass away defenders ready to help off the dribble.
Two passes away defense is on-the-line / up-the-line near or at the wall. Being ready for a skip pass to get back to their man.
If the ball pressure defender gets beat off the dribble and one pass away man is forced to help, then two passes away
defenders must also ready to help the helper.

Other Teaching Points
Hands up and in the passing lanes. "Hedge" on ball screens and "Third Man" on screens away from the ball. As always in the game of basketball, there are exceptions and other defensive concepts for screens may be applied. Communicate "ball" - "help" - all defenders be vocal to help your teammates. This can also distract the offense from executing plays. Be aware of "cutters" through the lane, to the post and to the elbows, corners and short corners. Keep your individual positioning between you and your man and you and the basket with your head on a swivel and always conscience of the wall. Remember that basketball is about (team) spacing and (individual) positioning. It is also about timing and angles. Done correctly, these principles will limit turnovers on offense. And they can create turnovers on defense. Rebounding is also a benefit from these four principles of spacing, positioning, angles, and timing. |
As with the wall "Line" is an invisible line, this time from the ball to each of the other offensive players.

Being ready for a skip pass to get back to their man. If the ball pressure defender gets beat off the dribble and one pass away man is forced to help, then two passes away defenders must also be ready to help the helper. Against great shooters, adjustments need to be made to not allow open shots. The four defenders not guarding the ball are to keep in mind the level of the ball in order to help. |
When the wall breaks down and gaps are penetrated with the dribble, scramble rotation comes into play.
Help defense must react quickly, filling the lanes - plugging the gaps. Scramble rotation of help, help, help the helper and help the helper's helper when executed with proper timing, spacing, position and angle to the ball will cause turnovers and prevent easy baskets. Scramble help rotation should leave only the furthest pass away from the basket open. After help is recover - back to your own man with proper spacing as a team and individual positioning between your man and the ball and your man and the basket. Communicate --"back" "help" "dead (ball)" Other Teaching Points |
Stop the dribble: Get back to your man. When help or any time defender stops the dribble, man on the ball yells - "dead, dead, dead". Other defenders can now get up on their man to force a turnover, deflect the ball, or create a bad pass. Always communicating on any type of screens and do not get beat on to the basket cuts.
Shoot the gap - the offense will have a brief open look. Defense, when reacting quickly can move into position to steal the ball. Get there first. Wide stance with arms up and hands in the passing lane.
Get your feet centered with your shoulders in front of the penetrating offensive dribble and take a charge.
Help the helper - Help the helper's helper - keep your head on a swivel being ready to front and bump cutters, drop to the level of the ball - help, fill, and recover.
Protect "the house" - the lane - the paint. No dribbling in the house. Make the offense take it outside.
When rotating to outside shooters, close out aggressively with hand up, ready to react to the ball being put on the floor and forcing dribble to opponents weak hand or to where the most help is ready. Use the baseline as a defender. But do not give up baseline.
